چکیده

We apply the level-set methodology to compute multivalued solutions of the paraxial eikonal equation in both isotropic and anisotropic metrics. This paraxial equation is obtained from 2D stationary eikonal equations by using one of the spatial directions as the artificial evolution direction. The advection velocity field used to move level sets is obtained by the method of characteristics; therefore, the motion of level sets is defined in a phase space, and the zero level set yields the location of bicharacteristic strips in the reduced phase space. The multivalued traveltime is obtained from solving another advection equation with a source term. The complexity of the algorithm is OðN 3 logNÞ in the worst case and OðN Þ in the average case, where N is the number of the sampling points along one of the spatial directions. Numerical experiments including the well-known Marmousi synthetic model illustrate the accuracy and the efficiency of the Eulerian method. 2004 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

A Slowness Matching Eulerian Method for Multivalued Solutions of Eikonal Equations

Traveltime, or geodesic distance, is locally the solution of the eikonal equation of geometric optics. However traveltime between sufficiently distant points is generically multivalued. Finite difference eikonal solvers approximate only the viscosity solution, which is the smallest value of the (multivalued) traveltime (‘‘first arrival time’’). The slowness matching method stitches together loc...

An Efficient Level Set Method for Constructing Wavefronts in Three Space Dimensions

Wavefront construction in geometrical optics has long faced the twin difficulties of dealing with multivalued forms and resolution of wavefront surfaces. A recent change in viewpoint, however, has demonstrated that working in phase space on bicharacteristic strips using eulerian methods can bypass both difficulties. The success of the level set method in science and engineering makes it a suita...

Maximum energy traveltimes calculated in the seismic frequency band

Prestack Kirchhoff migration using first arrival traveltimes has been shown to fail in areas of complex structure. I propose a new method for calculating traveltimes that estimates the traveltime of the maximum energy arrival, rather than the first arrival. The method estimates a traveltime that is valid in the seismic frequency band, not the usual high frequency approximation. Instead of solvi...
